Chapter Twenty

Tisha

Looking at Ayan and Dev, shirtless, side by side. I don’t know who is hotter. Definitely Ayan. He still has well-defined pecs. The boys enter the ocean in their shorts. The water must be cold because I see goosebumps appear on Ayan’s back. The back I want to dig my nails in. I lick my bottom lip and Emily catches me.

“Don’t drool,” she whispers.

I laugh it off.

“I’m not. I’m just…” I don’t know how to explain myself.

“You’re just looking at him like he is a piece of delicious cake with your favorite frosting,” she says and smiles.

“The same way you’re looking at Dev.”

She tucks a lock of her hair behind her ear.

“The only difference is I get to have that cake every night for the rest of my life.”

Point taken. I don’t even know if I will get my cake tonight. Probably not. It would have happened already if Ayan wanted. I see Ayan and Dev swimming in the ocean.

Emily hands me a can of margarita from the icebox. I accept it and take a few sips. Dev and Ayan are having a good time. We can’t hear them anymore, but by their mouth movement, I can see they are talking. They are standing in the ocean as the wave rushes towards them. They turn around and talk for another few minutes. Dev is at least six to seven feet away from Ayan. The water covers both of them up to their waist. I keep my gaze focused on Ayan. The way his lips move and the way his body shines in the moonlight. I’m in awe.

Ayan suddenly looks uncomfortable, like he is in pain. I keep my composure because I don’t want to overreact. He holds his hand out to Dev. I see Dev walking towards Ayan and taking his hand. They are coming out of the water, holding their hands. My heart stops.

“We told them to kiss earlier and now they’re playing us by holding hands,” says Emily. I want to tell her that while her attention was entirely on Dev, mine was on Ayan. I have seen discomfort on his face. I say nothing to her, but my heart stops just seeing them come out of the water in the strangest way.

I watch Dev wrap his hands around Ayan’s butt and drag him out of the water. They are close to the beach and I run towards them. The red color of the blood is in the water where they are coming from. Anxiety seeps into me like I can’t breathe anymore. When Dev brings Ayan out of the water, I see his ankle bleeding. I am in a panic. The blood rushing out feels like someone opened a bottle of coke. Except it’s not soda fizzing out, it’s blood. My Ayan’s blood.

“Oh my God, what happened?” I ask.

“I don’t know,” says Dev. I help him with Ayan and we finally get him out of the water. Ayan lies on his back on the beach screaming in pain.
